The Low-Residency Semester

Post-Master’s Certificate students may pursue writing enrichment focusing on a new project or exploring a new genre — or they may want to learn more about the teaching of creative writing. Writing enrichment students take part in a residency alongside MFA students and participate in faculty-led traditional genre workshops. Special-topics workshops are sometimes offered. After residency, the student begins a 12-credit-hour independent study working one-on-one with an MFA faculty mentor.

Students focused on teaching participate in a residency alongside MFA students and take part in a seminar in the teaching of creative writing. Next, during a 12-credit-hour independent study, they complete a pedagogy project in which they design an Introduction to Creative Writing syllabus and calendar with an MFA faculty mentor to guide them.

Certificate students also attend our virtual Business of Writing Seminars, which offer insights into editing, publishing, and career options. Students who wish to travel abroad may do so. Recent Naslund-Mann travel enrichment included trips to Paris, Quebec, and Vietnam. In September 2026, we travel to Edinburgh and the Lake District.
