Administrative Staff:

The SCC administrative staff is comprised of a Director, Thomas A. Bergandi, Ph.D. and two staff supervisors. The Director is a faculty member of the School of Professional Psychology and Social Work and a licensed psychologist in the State of Kentucky. The staff supervisors are part-time faculty members and also licensed psychologists.

Counseling Staff:

All counselors have professional preparation and are completing requirements for either the master's or doctoral degree in clinical psychology. They are enrolled in programs preparing them for work in community agencies or college and university counseling centers. Counselors are under the direct supervision of the administrative staff.

Location of the Student Counseling Center:

The SCC is located on the first floor of the Science Building in Room 103 and 104. Initial appointments may be made by calling the secretary of the Psychology Department at 585-7127.

Psychotherapy:

In addition to traditional individual counseling or psychotherapy, the staff of the SCC offers marital, family and group therapy to current students and staff of the Spalding University system.

Psychological Assessment:

Psychological assessment is an integral part of the services of the SCC. These services (i.e. assessment for learning disabilities, attention-deficit disorders, personality characteristics, etc.) are offered in conjunction with counseling and as a separate service.

Career Counseling & Assessment:

In cooperation with the Student Life and Development Office, the staff of the SCC administer various career assessment instruments to students and alumni of the university. An interpretation of the results, along with appropriate career counseling is also provided.

Consultation and Training:

The staff of the SCC work in teams of two to provide yearlong consultation services to various units of the university. The current consultation projects are as follows:

Residence Hall Assistant Program - The SCC staff are involved in the selection, training and ongoing development of the Morrison Hall RA’s. More specifically this team:

In addition, the staff is able to present various workshops to the staff and residents of Morrison Hall, such as: Conflict Management, Effective Crisis Intervention, Suicide Awareness & Assessment and Stress Management.

Peer Leader Program - The SCC staff provides the initial assessment, along with subsequent training and team building to the student members of this program. This team also offers specific training in ‘Time Management’, ‘Conflict Resolution’ and ‘Professional/Personal Boundaries’, as well as consulting on the development of a Policies and Procedures manual for the Peer Leader Program.

Successful Student Strategies Program - In addition to general consultation, the SCC team offers in-class instruction on ‘Stress management’.

The Joseph E. Kutz, M.D. International Center - The focus of this project is to provide timely and specialized psychological services to the increasing international student population of the university.

University Program Development - This SCC team is responsible, in conjunction with the Student Life and Development staff, for the development and presentation of various psycho-educational programs to the university community. Programs such as ‘Coping with Homesickness’, ‘Stress Management’, and ‘Customer Service" have been presented to various student and staff groups.

Athletic Department - Specialized consultation concerning psychological assessment, team building and performance enhancement are provided through this project.

Student Retention Project - All of the services and activities of the SCC are directly or indirectly related to helping Spalding students to successfully complete their degree requirements. In addition, the SCC is involved in a consultative role with the ‘Student Retention Project’ developed by the Student Life and Development Office.

Organizational Training and Development - The staff of the SCC also offers management consultation and training to all of the administrative and academic departments within the university system. These services can include team building, customer service training, stress management, executive/supervisor coaching, personnel selection, etc.

Crisis Management:

Although the SCC does not have the resources to provide a 24-hour emergency on-call service, we do have a commitment to our clients and the university to respond to the various emergent needs as quickly as our resources will allow. Throughout the year this commitment is tested and the SCC staff continues to meet these challenges in an effective and efficient manner.

Community Services:

In keeping with the long charitable traditions of Spalding University, the SCC offers some ‘pro bono’ services to the general community. Currently we have a working relationship with the Louisville Multiple Sclerosis Society whereby we are offering psychological services to various MS patients and their families. Not only does this provide a needed service to our community, but also enables the SCC to offer some specialized health psychology training to our student staff. Individual and family counseling is provided to patients referred by the Louisville Multiple Sclerosis Society.
