Enabling Technologies Kentuckiana
History & Mission
Enabling Technologies of Kentuckiana (enTECH) began business operations in April 1987, as the Disabled Citizens Computer Center, located in the Louisville Free Public Library. The center changed its name to Enabling Technologies of Kentuckiana in 1994 to more accurately represent the organization's overall mission. enTECH is one of 12 charter members of the national organization, the Alliance for Technology Access(ATA). Since its inception, enTECH's goal has been to increase awareness, understanding, and implementation of how microcomputer technology can assist people with disabilities by providing consultations, demonstrations, training, and information sharing. In October 2004, enTECH strengthened its collaborative partnership with Spalding University and the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy (ASOT) when it moved operations onto the Spalding University campus. As of July 1, 2005, enTECH became a division of the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy and a vibrant component of the Spalding University community. While technology is constantly changing, enTECH's focus remains to promote and foster independence and the potential of all persons by providing creative technology solutions. enTECH embraces the opportunity to work alongside persons of all ages, gender, race, and disabilities for full participation in life activities.
Enabling full participation in life
Our society is based on knowledge, where advancement occurs within contexts rich in technology multiplicity and access. Nearly twenty percent of the US population consists of individuals with various disabilities. Alternate technologies and access to the various aspects of our technological world is of vital importance to ensure all members of our society are included within its framework. An educational environment welcoming everyone to participate in programming will expand the diversity of our learning community and promote justice for many who otherwise might be excluded. The Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy (ASOT) and enTECH are extremely well positioned to be locally and nationally recognized as a part of a Spalding University "Center for Human Potential," an essential component of the university's mission and financial base. Our strategic initiatives are designed to enhance and strengthen ASOT, enTECH, the College of Health and Natural Science, Spalding University, and our greater community.
The integration and linkage of the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy (ASOT) and enTECH is designed to advance assistive technology educational opportunities for current and future practitioners while working with consumers for the aim of providing creative technology solutions to enhance participation in everyday life activities.
