President Search

Subject: Presidential Search Update
Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2009

As promised, we are keeping interested persons informed as our Presidential Search process continues. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Committee, I am pleased to provide you with this update. Working with our search consulting firm, RPA, Inc., the following activities have taken place:

  • A print advertisement inviting nominations and applications for the Spalding Presidency was placed in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • The position description and invitation for applications have been available for several weeks at the RPA website (www.rpainc.org).

It is also available at www.InsideHighered.com.

  • As I advised in my memo of October 30, a Presidential Prospectus was developed by our Search Committee and RPA, Inc. and is available at www.spalding.edu.
  • RPA has sent out more than 3,500 letters and e-mails to administration professionals in the academic and broader non-profit world and to for-profit organizations as well.
  • Beyond this general announcement, more than 1,500 follow-up contacts to targeted individuals have been made.

The results so far have been very gratifying. Thirty-two individuals have been “nominated” for the Spalding Presidency, and numerous other persons have made application for the position. RPA has followed up with every person nominated, self-nominated or applying for the position. As a result, a number of qualified candidates have completed the full application process.

We now anticipate that by the time the Search Committee begins to evaluate the candidates in early December, we will have a roster of many extremely well qualified candidates for them to consider for further interviews. Ultimately we will bring the finalists to the Spalding campus for meetings with the Board of Trustees, faculty members, administrative staff, students and Spalding Alumni.

We remain committed to a robust search process that is as transparent as a search of this nature can be. The search process remains right on schedule, and the next update will come in mid-December. Everyone, please enjoy the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.
